Gracing the Grass
for Central Saint Martins

University of the Arts London declared that it is a social purpose university tackling today’s greatest challenges.

Gracing the Grass is a physical and AR experience and a meditation on relating to nature within the context of UAL’s climate justice principles and example of carbon-conscious art.

As a CSM Climate Advocate, I took UAL students and staff out into nature with the intention to foster presence, connection and relating to the natural world with our hearts outside of the classroom.

Results: the experience became a Time in Nature resource, showcasing examples of education in nature; students commented on wishing to do the activity to bond with fellow students at the start of term.

GRACING THE GRASS

"I really like the technological aspect [in Gracing the Grass] as well because there is not a kind of either or. We live in a highly technologised society and it is very much part of our lives. It’s not a kind of rejection of the digital for the natural. It’s about finding ways that the two can interconnect."

Heather Barnett, MA Art & Science Course Leader, Central Saint Martins, University of Arts London, UK
